At the beginning of Term 2, students were spoken to in gathering regarding the formation a Sports Council and had the opportunity to apply to be a member of the group.  This gathering was led by Gold Ambassador Anna Kingwell and Silver Ambassadors Kelly-Ann Hutchinson and Catherine Harper. The aim of the Sports Council was to find students who were enthusiastic, committed and enjoyed participating in sport.  Additionally, we were looking for students who could bring new exciting ideas to the College sports extension programme and would take an active role in organising and promoting interdivisional sports activities. There are a total of 30 individuals comprising of students from all divisions and Year groups, as well as the Sports Captains and Young Ambassadors.

So far the Sports Council was actively involved in supporting the campaign for saving the School Sports Partnership.  This is a campaign that was set up by Young Sports Ambassadors across the country as a result of the recent government spending review. Here at the College, The Sports Council informed the students regarding the aim of the School Sports Partnership and how their funding was having a positive impact on Sport within the college as well as on them as individuals. The Sports Council members visited each tutor base and asked students who believed in the power of school sport to sign petition. We collected a total of 665 signatures which contributed to the 750,000 signatures collected nationally. The petitions were presented as Downing Street and as a result £70 million will continue to be invested in to school sport.

The Sports Council has been involved in the promotion of the College extension programme with the hope that more students will get involved in sport. Some members have also been involved in the organising and running of the activities each week.  The following students and members of the Sports Council regularly lead and organise extension activities: Anna Kingwell (Girls Football), Kayleigh Hardy (Netball), Kelly- Ann Hutchinson (Netball) and Finlay Holland (Basketball).

The Sports Council also launched the Mascot competition to design mascots for each division as well putting together a development plan and gaining Get Set status for the College.

The Sports Council are now launching a new project which will link each of the year groups to one of the seven Olympic and Paralympic values.

• Year 7 is linked to Friendship as students are joining Landau Forte College Derby from many different Primary schools therefore they are meeting new people and making new friends.
• Year 8 is linked to Respect as Trade Fair requires them to work in groups made up of people that they may not normal work with. The students need to respects others and their opinions during the project.
• Year 9 is linked to Courage as students need to have the courage to make decisions about their future when choosing which subjects to carry on into Key Stage 4.
• Year 10 is linked to Inspiration as they have the opportunity to go on a work placement that will hopefully give them an inspiration and insight into possible pathways of employment.
• Year 11 is linked to Determination as students must keep revising and work hard as it is their final year of compulsory education. They need to be determined to put the effort in to their study in order to gain their qualifications.
• Year 12 is linked to Equality. This is because we have both internal and external students coming to join the college in to study for their A-levels. All students are all taking on a new challenge therefore they are on the same playing field.
• Year 13 is linked to Excellence as this is the final year that the students have in the college and they are working towards being the best they can be. They are being role models to younger students, giving them something to aspire to and work to their maximum potential to achieve their goals.
